During Reading
Have your child point with finger or encourage them to read with their eyes Put their finger in for the "tricky" parts When they come to a word they don't know....try this: Look at the picture. Think about the story...what would make sense. Get your mouth ready to say the word. Look for "chunks" you know. Go back and reread it again.
After Reading
Talk about the story. Reread the tricky parts. Find the punctuation marks and practice reading with expression. Practice familiar books "Reading it like you're talking....fluent!"
Writing With Your Child
Words They Don't Know
Say the word to your child. Have your child say the word back to you. Have your child say the word again SLOWLY! Write the sounds as you /child say the words SLOWLY! Write any tricky parts for the child and let them write the parts they know. Help them think of other words they know like that word or parts of the word. Talk about sentence structure such as using capital letter at beginning of the sentence, good spacing, and ending punctuation.
